Oldest Rice Storage (Kamalig)
|
One day, I visited Nimfa Rueda's old warehouse in the heart of the city. To my astonishment, I discovered that it is the oldest traditional Rice Storage (Lumang Kamalig). It's an incredible historical landmark that I had never seen before, connecting me to the past when Central Luzon was known as the Rice Granary.
Upon entering through the front gate, the entire Kamalig unfolds before you, enclosed by an old iron roof. The columns and beams are crafted from mulawin and yakal woods, preserving the structure for many years.
The warehouse comprises six chamber rooms, each surrounded by walls made of mulawin wood. What makes it truly fascinating is the combination of manual and mechanical rice dispensers and a stairway for filling the chambers when they are about to reach capacity.
The owner aims to preserve the original image and structure of the warehouse, envisioning it as an event space, art gallery, or even a museum with a simple restaurant.
The Kamalig serves as a poignant reminder of her life during the 70s, evoking memories of her time with her nanay Saning (Dra. Susana Rueda-Violago) who raised her, along with her husband Atty. Bernabe Violago, in a house next to the Kamalig.
