British Artist Gerard Whyman Accepts Hand, Finger, and Nail Painting Challenge from Amangpintor
(by Amangpintor  5/11/2025)

San Jose City, Nueva Ecija — British artist Gerard Whyman visited the Amangpintor Art Museum on May 11, 2025, where he took on a unique challenge posed by celebrated Filipino folk artist Elito “Amangpintor” Circa — to complete a painting using only his hand, fingers, and nails.

Under the step-by-step instruction of Amangpintor, the session unfolded in a spirited and inspiring atmosphere. Both artists successfully completed their artworks in under 20 minutes, marking the moment not only as a creative experiment but also as a heartfelt act of friendship through the universal language of art.

“Art has no borders,” Amangpintor said. “It’s about connection, and today we showed that through our hands — literally.”

Gerard Whyman, a seasoned cartoonist and visual artist from Newport, Wales, has spent decades shaping a diverse portfolio that includes cartoons, fine art, and public art installations. Known for his sharp wit and expressive linework, Whyman has exhibited across the UK and in international collections, with works featured in Private Eye, The Oldie, and in numerous galleries and cartoon festivals.

The collaboration with Amangpintor — famed for pioneering the use of his own hair and blood as art mediums and for founding the Indigenouism Art movement — was more than just a meeting of styles. It was a meeting of hearts. Whyman, joined by his Filipina wife Rosita, embraced the challenge as a gesture of friendship, curiosity, and respect for Filipino culture.

Whyman's brief yet meaningful visit to the museum, set in the lush artistic grounds of San Jose City, offered a fresh perspective on intercultural art dialogue. “I’ve drawn live for crowds before, but never like this,” Whyman said. “It was raw, honest, and something I’ll never forget.”

The event is part of Amangpintor's ongoing mission to bring art closer to communities and to build friendships across nations through creativity. It stands as a simple but powerful reminder that art can unite — one handprint at a time.
